Constanza Guajardo
Education
Constanza Guajardo is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Applied Ethics of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. She holds a DPhil in Politics (Political Theory) from the University of Oxford. She is also an Industrial Engineer, a Political Scientist, and holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Sciences from UC Chile. She has taught the courses Ethics, Economics, and Business; and Ethics for Engineering in undergraduate programs; and Business Ethics at the UC Master’s in Applied Ethics program. Previously, she was a tutor and marker for the courses Theory of Politics; and Advanced Paper in Theories of Justice at the University of Oxford. She has been invited to present her work at conferences at the Universities of Manchester, Warwick, Bristol, Oxford, LSE, among others. Prior to her academic career, she spent three years in Corporate and Investment Banking at BCI Bank, and served as an Associate Researcher for the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
Research
Her research areas are in applied ethics and political theory; she mainly focuses on business ethics and on normative political economy. Within the domain of business ethics, her research has examined the ethical dimensions of insider trading, bank failures, exploitation in markets, and financial speculation. Her contributions to normative political economy have focused on the ethics of the international monetary system, universal basic income, and economic sanctions. She has also published on public reason and animal rights. She has been awarded two Fondo Inicio grants, in 2024 and 2025. In 2026 she was awarded a FONDECYT Initiation grant for the project “Responsibility for Crises and the Ethics of the IMF”. This project addresses responsibility for financial crises, and the normative dimensions of sovereign debt taken to overcome crises with institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as the ethics of this institution.
